WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester County Sheriff’s office was out in Worcester Wednesday handing out new winter coats to people in need.

Saint John’s Food for the Poor is just one of more than 20 stops the sheriff’s office is making this month to prepare people for the cold winter. With help from their community partners, they’re handing out coats they collected from a drive earlier in the month.

Sheriff Lew Evangelidis said Wednesday’s stop at Saint John’s Food for the Poor has a special meaning for those involved.

“Saint John’s is very special, this is one of our very first places we’ve ever come,” Evangelidis said. “They feed this community, they take care of people and there’s a lot of need out there and we bring these coats today to show that we live in a community that cares about them. “It’s a beautiful day and so many grateful recipients are here and we’re glad to just play a part and Worcester County a better place.

The sheriff’s office is aiming to set a record this year by handing out 4,000 winter coats.
