WORCESTER, Mass. — Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis and 19 recruits from the Sheriff’s Office 37th Basic Recruit Training Academy took to the road this weekend for the 2nd Annual Mary Mclnerney-Zona 5K Road Race held in Worcester.

The Sheriff and the future correction officers who are in basic training ran in cadence style formation and were thrilled to be part of a great race for a great cause.

The annual road race is in honor of Mary Mclnerney-Zona who lost a courageous battle to breast cancer in July 2009 with race proceeds going to the Zona Childrens Fund.

“Today is a special day to run in the 2nd Annual Mary Mclnerney-Zona 5K Road Race along side the new recruits from our 37th Basic Training Academy which will go to benefit a wonderful cause,” said Evangelidis. “Many of us have been touched in some way by this terrible disease and the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office is thrilled to be able to participate in today’s race and family event celebrating Mary’s life.”
