CHARLTON — Responding to a request from the Town of Charlton, a group of inmates from the Worcester County Jail and House of Correction painted both the interior and exterior of the Charlton Fire station on Power Station Road.
The Community Service workcrews are made up of officer-supervised inmates, convicted of non-violent crimes, who have earned their place in the program. The cities and towns of Worcester County have saved over one million dollars since January.
The program not only saves the tax-payers thousands of dollars but also provides inmates with a feeling of productivity and dignity. “This program is a valuable resource for our local communities,” said Evangelidis. “The inmates are able to complete much needed
projects at no cost to the tax-payer.”
Evangelidis has doubled the size of the community service program this year. During a visit to the work site Evangelidis received positive feedback from Charlton Fire Department Administrative Assistant Terri Gough who said, “This work would not have been done without this program. I can’t think of a better win-win for municipalities.”
