MILLBURY, Mass. – Responding to a request from town officials, Worcester County Sheriff Lewis G. Evangelidis recently provided inmates to paint the lobby, conference rooms and offices of the Municipal Office Building.

The work, provided through the Sheriff’s Inmate Community Service Program, saved taxpayers about $10,000.

The inmate work release crews are made up of nonviolent, non-sex offender individuals approaching the end of their sentence who have earned a place in the Community Service Program.

Since taking office last year, Evangelidis has more than doubled the size of the Inmate Community Service Program. In 2011 inmate crews completed projects at Millbury’s Public Library, Windle Field, the Fire Department, Council on Aging and the Department of Public Works resulting in significant savings of over $46,000.

“The Inmate Community Service Program has provided a true win-win for the town of Millbury and for the Sheriff’s Department. With local communities continuing to struggle during these tough fiscal times, our inmate work crews are able to complete worthy projects at public libraries, fire departments, ballfields and municipal buildings at little or no cost to the town. This results in a significant savings for taxpayers while inmates who are selected for the program appreciate the opportunity of a productive days work,” Evangelidis said.

“The Community Service Program is a great asset for our local communities and as sheriff I will continue to provide this much needed and valuable resource to the cities and towns throughout Worcester County.”

“I cannot thank Sheriff Evangelidis enough for providing the Inmate Community Service Program to the town of Millbury. The Sheriff’s inmate work crews have done an excellent job and have completed numerous projects throughout the town from our ballfields to our Public Library and most recently with the extensive painting of our Municipal Office Building. This is truly a wonderful program which has provided a great cost savings and benefit to our community.” said Millbury Town Manager Robert Spain.
