The Leominster Champion
LEOMINSTER – Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis recently delivered custom made wooden house numbers to seniors in Leominster.
The House Numbering Program is part of the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office Senior Safety initiative TRIAD; a partnership between the Sheriff’s Office, local Police and Fire Departments, and the Council on Aging. The initiative’s goal is to both identify and address senior safety concerns. The House Numbering program is designed to help police, fire, and EMS locate a house during an emergency by providing a clearly marked, reflective number.
“It is very important to have an easily visible street number to help direct first responders to your house. In an emergency, every second counts,” said Evangelidis. “This program is a great example of our collective effort to improve safety for our seniors and could even save a life.”
With wood generously donated by Atlas Box Company in Sutton, and inmate labor the signs are offered to seniors at no cost. Glass, provided by Southbridge Police Chief Daniel Charette, is added to the paint making the number reflective and visible at night. To date the Sheriff’s Office has distributed over 600 signs since January throughout Worcester County.
“I appreciate the Sheriff’s support with this important public safety program. The signs not only help during an emergency, but also provide uniformity, letting strangers know that residents are aware of what is going on in their neighborhood,” said Faith Anderson, Leominster senior and Lunenburg’s Council on Aging Community Outreach Coordinator.
The House Numbering Program is available to Worcester County Councils on Aging and seniors.
