As we always say, unfortunately, graffiti is like a weed. It can quickly grow out of control and invite other crimes when you don't stay on top of it!

The Worcester County Sheriff's Office is experiencing a record year of harvests on its inmate-run organic farm. The unprecedented amount of produce is all thanks to the consistently high humidity, stimulating sunshine, and rapturous rainstorms.

For over a dozen years, inmates at the Worcester County House of Correction have grown fresh produce on the Sheriff’s Office’s Organic Farm as part of the inmate work-release program. The produce harvested benefits dozens of Worcester County food banks, senior centers, soup kitchens, veteran groups, and charitable organizations. Produce is also used to feed the inmate population in the facility.

The 2024 growing season is off to an electric start with the ideal environmental conditions. The Sheriff’s Office noted that work release crews yield 750-1000 lbs. of produce with each harvest. Further, the Sheriff’s Office has added a second delivery crew to distribute the produce to community partners throughout Worcester County.

Inmates who can participate in the work-release program are low-risk and non-violent. The inmates who qualify for the program, and choose to be in it, receive “good time” credits each month for their positive behavior and active participation in programming.

Yesterday, the Worcester County Sheriff's Office welcomed the Webster Police Department Massachusetts Junior Police Academy to our facility to tour the Worcester County Jail and House of Correction. 🚨🚔

The group ranged from ages 14-17 and was composed of respectful, attentive, and curious participants interested in careers in law enforcement.

The produce harvested by the inmate work crews has not only benefitted dozens of Worcester County food banks, senior centers, soup kitchens, veteran groups, and charitable organizations but also the inmate population serving time in the Worcester County Jail and House of Correction.

Yesterday, two individuals were recognized for graduating from the Worcester County Sheriff's Office Substance Treatment Opportunity Program (S.T.O.P.). In addition, two inmates who are part of the S.T.O.P. program were also recognized for earning their HISET, or high school equivalency, credentials. 📚🌟

The S.T.O.P. program allows those who qualify to be removed from general population for the 3 or 6-month duration of the program and placed in a rehabilitation/treatment clinic housing unit. This separation eliminates the external pressures of being in general population for those struggling to achieve sobriety.

The multi-departmental effort works to address the root causes of addiction and co-occurring disorders while also setting individuals up for success beyond sobriety. The program is coupled with specialized classes and vocational opportunities, only seen in a select few correctional facilities in the country.

We are grateful for the hard work done by the Sheriff's Office staff each day. 🌟🌟🌟

The Worcester County Sheriff's Office Organic Farm is producing vegetables at a rate we have never seen before! The crops are loving the consistent sun, humidity, and periodic rain. 🌞🥒🚜

With the abundance, we are organizing TWO delivery crews to get zucchini, squash, and cucumbers out to senior centers, veterans organizations, and local food pantries. We are eager for the already historic growing year to continue and for additional varieties of fruits and vegetables to become ready for harvest.
