Position: Corrections Officer


Eligibility Requirements:

BEFORE HIRE

  1. Present an original high school diploma or G.E.D. certificate; as well as verification of:
    • An Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or institution of higher learning; or
    • Documentation of 60 credits towards completion of a Bachelors Degree at an accredited college or institution of higher learning; or
    • Two years of military service
  2. Present an original birth certificate;
    • Applicants must be 19 years of age
  3. Present an original Social Security Card
  4. Present an original and valid driver’s license [1]
  5. Prove United State Citizenship
  6. Pass a criminal records check [2]
  7. Pass a physical fitness test
  8. Pass a written skills test, oral interview, and a physical fitness test
  9. Pass a background investigation [3]
  10. Submit to, and successfully pass, a drug test
  11. Submit to a psychological examination to be performed by a license psychologist, the results of which may be considered when evaluating candidates [4]

AFTER HIRE

  1. Successfully complete a required training course of basic corrections training. Corrections academy will be administered by staff of WCSO and will last approximately 12 weeks. [5]
  2. Successfully complete a 12- month probationary period [6]

[1] Corrections Officers are required to have a valid driver’s license. An RMV background check will be completed prior to offer of employment

[2] Individuals who have been convicted of or pled guilty to a felony will be ineligible for employment as a Corrections Officer

[3] WCSO reserves the right to perform a thorough background investigation of all applications. Background investigations may include, but is not limited to: interview of references, former employers, relatives, etc.

[4] Psychological examination will be reserved for employees who have completed initial rounds of screening. The test will be administered by a licensed psychologist who will be determined by WCSO. WCSO will be responsible for the cost of administering the examination.

[5] The length of recruit academies may be increased up to 14 weeks at the discretion of the Sheriff and the Assistant Deputy Superintendent of Training.

[6] Candidates participating in the WCSO Corrections Academy or employed on a probationary status will be compensated as determined by Collective Bargaining Agreement.
